What started as a small job to enlarge a rear outdoor entertaining area grew into a major improvement project as the owners of this Riverdowns property realised the potential of their colonial-style home. The end result was a fully screened deck area three times the original; a covered walkway to a separate garage and studio; and a modern airy bathroom/sauna added to the garage and studio building to replace a bare paved area. Our key challenge was to ensure that the extensions did not look like ‘add ons’, but effectively blended with the home’s traditional colonial styling. We achieved this by a seamless roof extension, replacing aluminium windows with timber-framed windows, and using eco-friendly remilled timber (with corked joins) for the expansive decking.

There is no better example of a builder’s skill in seamlessly joining the old and ‘new’ than this detached extension in Tarragindi. The owners of the art deco style home wanted a comfortable granny flat-cum-parents’ retreat to externally complement the older style house in every way possible. The result is a perfect match… in design, look, colour, roof tiles, window treatments and even the once fashionable dark bull-nosed bricks. The bonus is that this garden getaway also creates a contemporary internal space perfectly matched for the comforts of modern living. Surprisingly the opposite ‘faces’ of this interesting extension not only attract, but blend seamlessly, regardless of the angle at which they are viewed. The retreat is tailor-made for lazy Sunday afternoons or entertaining guests in ultra-modern seclusion. Internally, the retreat is entirely on one level. It comprises a no-fuss kitchenette, a generous open-plan living and bedroom area that opens directly onto a covered deck, and a stunning feature bathroom.
